Was Sinai God’s Plan B? | Sinai, Law, and Promise

If salvation is by grace through promise, why did God give Israel the law at Sinai?

In episode 10 of Marrowcast, Jeff and John wrestle with one of the most important questions in covenant theology: what is the relationship between the promise of grace and the giving of the law?

Paul insists in Galatians 3 that the law, given 430 years after the promise to Abraham, did not cancel or replace that promise. Sinai was not God abandoning grace and returning sinners to a covenant of works as the way of salvation. The law was added because of transgressions, exposing sin, shutting every mouth, and showing sinners their need for Christ.

Jeff and John also discuss why Christians still need the law. Freedom from the condemnation of the law does not mean freedom from God’s moral will.

In Christ, the believer no longer hears the law as the covenant of works saying, “Do this and live.” The order has been reversed by grace: live, and do this.
