What do you hold onto when you cannot see what God is doing?
Peter writes to believers facing false teaching, uncertainty, and the darkness of life in a fallen world. His answer is not to look inward for greater confidence, stronger feelings, or extraordinary experiences. He points the church to the sure Word God has given.
Peter had seen Christ's majesty on the Mount of Transfiguration. He had heard the Father declare, “This is my beloved Son.” The Transfiguration was a preview of the glory still to come—a glimpse of the morning before the night had ended.
But the church does not need Peter’s experience to have Peter’s confidence.
We have been given the Word.
When the Christian asks:
Is Christ really for me?
Have I sinned too much?
What if my faith is too small?
What if I do not feel saved?
Is Christ really coming again?
Faith returns to the same solid ground:
“Thus He hath spoken.”
We have not yet seen the morning break. But we have been given a lamp for the night.
And until Christ comes, we hold fast to the Word and to the Christ given to us there.
