For much of my life, the judgment seat of Christ was presented to me as something a Christian could survive but could not anticipate with joy.

I was taught to imagine a separate judgment for believers in which every work would be examined, every failure potentially exposed, and every Christian ranked according to what remained after the fire. Salvation might be secure, but shame, loss, and uncertainty still seemed to hang over the final day.

As I grew in my understanding of the gospel, one question became increasingly difficult to ignore:

If Christ has fully borne the condemnation of His people, what remains to be reopened against them on the last day?

That question eventually became, The Judgment Seat of Christ.

What This Book Argues

This is not an attempt to minimize the reality or seriousness of the final judgment. Scripture teaches that Christ will return to judge the living and the dead. The last day will be comprehensive, public, and eternally consequential.

The question is not whether judgment is real. The question is how Scripture teaches us to understand it.

In this short primer, I examine the passages most often used to defend a separate believer-only judgment, including Romans 14, 2 Corinthians 5, and 1 Corinthians 3. I argue that these passages do not establish a second tribunal where Christians are exposed and ranked for rewards.

Instead, Scripture presents one final judgment with two outcomes.

For those outside of Christ, that day will reveal condemnation. For those united to Christ, it will reveal the saving verdict already secured through His death and resurrection.

The believer’s works will be brought into the light, but they will not serve as the basis of his acceptance before God. Christians are judged according to works, not on the basis of works. Their works are the public evidence of God’s gracious workmanship, the fruit of union with Christ, and the testimony of what the risen Savior has accomplished in His people.
